Unidentified armed men shot dead an elderly couple Wednesday around 8:30 p.m at their house near Urumpirai Katpahapillayar temple, while their 9 year old grandson escaped miraculously. The victims' house is located just 300 meters from Palaly road in the High Security Zone (HSZ), always guarded by Sri Lanka Army (SLA) troopers.
The victims were identified as Vairamuthu Sivaganeshathasan, 59, a trader and his wife Sarojini Sivaganeshathasan, 53. Sivakumar Kapilan, 9, is their grandson who escaped being shot to death. There are no neighbouring houses near the victims' house and Kapilan had to spend the whole night crying beside his grandparents' bodies. The villagers came to know of the killings only when he came out at dawn to them, the villagers said. A hiace van and lorry belonging to the trader, who is said to be a millionaire, were found remaining in his compound. Kopay police recovered the bodies Thursday evening and handed them over to Jaffna Teaching hospital. The killers could not have done this without the SLA being aware of their movements, the villagers added.
