Young IDP killed by stray bullet hit in Vadamaradchy

A young Internally Displaced Person (IDP) was killed by a stray bullet believed to be fired by Sri Lanka Army (SLA) at Manatkadu in Vadamarachchy East region in Jaffna district Friday, sources in Point Pedro said. The victim succumbed to his injuries at Manthikai hospital, hospital sources said.

G. Manoharan, 24, from Mantkadu was displaced by tsunami of December 24, and was staying in the Transit camp when the bullet hit him at about 3:00 p.m. He was rushed to the hospital where he died after two hours.

Point Pedro police is conducting the investigations.

Sri Lanka Army and Navy have been jointly undergoing military exercises in the coastal areas of the Vadamarachchy region including the populated Manatkadu and other villages for the last few days.

The area residents have appealed to the humanitarian organizations to stop the exercises, the military exercises continue.
