A conductor with the Sri Lanka Transport Board (SLTB) has been abducted in Veala'nai in Jaffna Islets Thursday, according a complaint made by his wife at the Jaffna Offices of Human Rights Commission. Meanwhile, a postal worker has also disappeared in Neduntheevu Thursday, islet residents reaching Jaffna said. Telephone communications to the islets have been cut-off and no official complaint has yet been registered with the HRC, civil society sources in Jaffna said.

Mathiyaparanam Pratheepan, 33, a father of three children, from Kolumpuththu'rai, Jaffna, and working as conductor at the Koa'ndaavil bus depot was travelling in a bus to Ku'rikaadduvaan at the time of the abduction. He had stepped out in Veala'nai to report the engine failure of the bus when he was abducted, the complaint said.

Employees of SLTB in Jaffna protested the abduction by suspending public bus services in Jaffna after 12:00 noon Friday. Only the buses transporting school children ran Friday afternoon.
