Thousands of Sri Lanka Army (SLA) troopers were involved in a large scale cordon and search operation in Kurunakar in Jaffna Municipality and in the adjoining coastal areas Saturday early morning, sources in Jaffna said. This was the second such operation in the last two days.
During the search operation the Kurunakar fishermen were not permitted to go fishing, and all main roads leading to this predominantly fishing area were blocked by the SLA. Details of any arrests made during the search were not available until Saturday afternoon. The officials of the Jaffna office of Sri Lanka Human Rights Commission while acknowledging that they were aware of the military operation said that they have not received complaints of any arrests being made. Following a claymore attack on SLA Thursday afternoon, a similar operation was conducted on Friday in the adjoining Chu'ndikkuzhi and Eechchamoaddai areas. The attendance of students in the schools located in this area was very low on Friday, sources said.
