Sri Lanka Navy (SLN) announced Sunday the fishing ban imposed after the battle with sea Tigers on June 19 was being lifted partially allowing fishing within restricted areas in the region. In Vadamaraadchi North, fishing is being permitted from Valveddiththu'rai up to Point Pedro Munai, Katkoava'lam, and in Vadamaraadchi East fishing is being allowed in Ma'nalkaadu, Kudaththanai and Ampan, according to fisheries union officials.
Following the easing of the ban on fishing on Sunday, hundreds of fishermen ventured out to fish in their catamarans, union officials added. However, many fishermen including those from Chupparmadam and adjoining areas have objected to limitations imposed by SLN regarding the embarkation points for fishing, and refused to go out to sea protesting that they should be permitted to commence fishing from their usual points of departure. Meanwhile, SLN continued to refuse to allow fishermen from areas surrounding Chupparmadam to go fishing from Chupparmadam insisting that the fishermen should go out for fishing from Inparuddi, located 5 km from Chupparmadam pier.
