SLA, armed group exchange fire in Karaveddi

Sri Lanka Army (SLA) road patrol unit and a group of unidentified men exchanged fire near Arasadi junction on Point Pedro-Kodikaamam road in Karaveddi, Vadamaraadchi at 4:00 p.m. Tuesday, sources in Jaffna said. The firefight lasted for more than 10 minutes. Details of injuries or casualties are not known.
The attackers escaped the area after the firefight. Tension prevailed around the area, located close to Nelliyadi junction. Manthikai Government Hospital sources said that no one has been admitted to the hospital Tuesday afternoon or evening. Arasadi junction in Karaveddi has been the site of several earlier skirmishes. Arasadi-Choa'nappu Road runs south from Aradadi junction to Choa'nappu cemetary, and Mudakkaadu, a playing field now turned into residential area, lies to the north along a lane that branches off from the junction. A father of four children was shot dead near Mudakkaadu on 30 June 2007. Several shooting incidents had earlier occured near Champanthar shop located along the Arasadi-Choa'nappu road.
