Tamil residents of Vavu'natheevu division in Batticaloa
district, displaced due to Sri Lanka Army (SLA) offensives and
recently resettled in their villages, continue to suffer as basic
facilities are yet to be restored, according to Vavu'natheevu
Divisional Secretary K. Vimalanathan. Besides lack of food and adequate
shelters the villagers are unable to resume agricultural activities
due to lack of funds.
4294 houses in Vavu'natheevu have been completely damaged due to war, and
and destruction by wild elephants, according to K. Vimalanathan. ICRC and UNCHR are engaged in constructing temporary shelters for the
resettled IDPs. Schools, roads and other structures have also been heavily damaged by war.
Electricity has not been restored, residents said.
