A 19-year-old youth was shot dead by unknown gunmen along Martin Road, inside the High Security Zone of Jaffna town Friday morning. The victim, Subramaniam Jeyanthiran, had earlier received death threats from the Sri Lanka Army (SLA) and was held in protective custody of Jaffna prison through the Jaffn Human Rights office. He was released from custody on his own request only recently, sources in Jaffna said.
Jeyanthiran's national identity card was confiscated by the SLA soldiers during the cordon and search operation in Kurunakar and surrounding areas Wednesday, and he was directed by the soldiers to report Friday to the Chinnakkadai Jaffna camp located at one end of Martin Road. When Jeyanthiran was on his way to the SLA camp through the 4th Cross Street in front of the Jaffna Courts Friday , the SLA soldiers at the sentry point had ordered him to proceed through Martin Road where he was shot. Jaffna Magistrate R.T. Wignarajah is conducting investigations into the death. Meanwhile, officials of the Jaffna HRC confirmed that Jeyanthiran had complained to their offices several times of death threats from the SLA.
