SLA shells explode in Pu'liyangku'lam hospital[TamilNet, Monday, 16 July 2007, 08:33 GMT]Patients and staff of Pu'liyangku'lam hospital in Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) held area in Vavuniyaa district fled to save their lives when Sri Lanka Army (SLA) launched heavy, sustained rocket fire, on the hospital twice on Sunday noon and Sunday night around 00:30 a.m., sources in Vanni said. The SLA rocket fire caused severe damage to the hospital buildings while completely destroying the electricity generator of the hospital and the transformer located in front of the hospital. Two shells exploded right inside the hospital shattering the windows and splintering the furniture and other equipments. The maternity ward and out patients wing have been totally damaged. The wrecked hospital is the only one in LTTE controlled Vavuniya district, serving the needs of more than 15,000 inhabitants. SLA Deep Penetration Unit (DPU) triggered a claymore mine July 10, killing five persons including Tamileelam Health Service personnel near Mangku'lam, an area not far from Pu'liyangku'lam, severely affecting the health service in the area. The SLA rocket fire also caused damages to Pu'liyangku'lam Teachers' Resource Centre, civilian residences and Pazhaiyavaadi Governemnt Tamil Mixed School. People living in villages close to SLA positions located along the borders of the LTTE held Vavuniyaa district, unable to get medicines and other essentials, have been the beneficiaries of Pu'liyangku'lam hospital, local residents said.
