JVP-backed plantation workers union to fight for wage increase

All Ceylon Upcountry Workers Union (ACUWU), a trade union supported by the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP), has announced that it would launch a struggle from 1st August demanding increased salary and other benefits to plantation workers to cushion the rise of cost of living due to price increases, sources in Hill country said.
ACUWU President Mr.Ramalingam Chandrasekaran who is also a JVP parliamentarian addressing a press briefing Friday in Colombo said the first phase of struggle will commence on August 1 in Hatton in Nuwara Eliya district, Badulla in Badulla district, and other key towns in upcountry. The second phase will start on August by holding demonstrations and public meetings, the union officials said.
