In a letter addressed to the Minister of Resettlement and Disaster Relief, Abdul Risath Badiyudeen, Monday Tamil National Alliance (TNA) parliamentarian for Batticaloa district, Ms T. Thangeswary, appealed for assistance to allow the civilians resettled in Paduvaankarai to live peacefully without being harassed by Sri Lanka Army (SLA).
The full text of the letter follows: "The entire area of Paduvaankarai is under the control of SLA but yet the people recently resettled here are facing various hard ships. The SLA troopers enter into the homes of the residents and harass the women that many have complained that it has become impossible for them to stay there. We also have received a number of complaints of abductions:
- On 7th June, Ms.Thavamany, Balasunderam, 27, of Munmaari, Maavadi abducted from her home was raped and murdered.
- From 10th Maanikapody of Pachchaikody Swamimalai has gone missing
- On 04th Rajendiram from Munmaari, Maavadi, disappeared
In the villages of Thaanthaamalai, cordon and search operations are being conducted on a daily basis. While this area is under the complete control of SLA what is the necessity for harassing these civilians? People settled here have begun moving to various other places.
So far 53 families have moved from Viduthikkalmadu while 7 families from Choalaiyakam too have left the area. I appeal to you to take the necessary steps to enable the resettled civilians to live in peace, " the MP said in her letter.
