Tension in Mannaar town

Tension prevailed in Mannaar town Friday evening when the Sri Lanka Army (SLA) started firing artillery shells towards areas held by the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam(LTTE) from South Bar army camp in the town, residents said.

About ten artillery shells were fired starting from 4.30 p.m., civil sources said.

Shops keepers immediately put up shutters and people fled to the safety of their homes.

Traffic came to a standstill, and offices of the state sector and non-governmental organizations closed.
