Restriction imposed on Moothoor Muslim, Tamil fishermen

Moothoor fishermen are restricted to fish within 2 km from the shore and can only use boats without outboard motors, Government security establishment has announced. The restrictions are likely to be strictly enforced on fishermen of Muslim and Tamil communities and this will drastically impact the economic well-being of the fishing communities, fisheries society sources said.

Meanwhile Sinhalese fishermen are allowed to use mechanized boats to fish even in high security Zone Sea, sources said.

Moothoor fishermen have made representations in this regard to Mr.Rauff Hakeem, Minister of Posts and Telecommunications and leader of the Sri Lanka Muslim Congress (SLMC), when he visited Moothoor area last Friday.
