A member of the Eelam People's Democratic Party (EPDP) who surrendered this morning to the Sri Lankan Police in Jaffna town claimed that he had been detained and tortured in the group's camp at the Power House building, close to Srithar Theater on Stanley road.
He said he had joined the EPDP in 1992 while he was living in India. Kasiraman Jeyanthan, 29, alias Kethees, claimed that he was abducted by EPDP cadres Sivakumar, Nepolian, Nirmal, Murali and Vasanthan (Ed: first names only) about three months ago. He claimed that 18 other EPDP cadres are being held at the camp including Rakavan, Vasan, Kabil, Maran, Hashee, Nimal, Roshan, Rajroopan, Rahu and Rajenthiran (Ed: first names only). However the allegation against the EPDP could not be independently confirmed and the EPDP itself has not commented on the issue so far. Meanwhile, another EPDP cadre who had surrendered to the Human Rights Commission in Jaffna has been handed back to the EPDP said sources in Jaffna.
