Tamil Literary Festival to be held in Batticaloa

The Eastern Provincial Council is to hold Tamil Literary Festival in Batticaloa during the last week of October 2007 for the first time after the de-merger of North East Provincial Council (NEPC), civil society sources in Batticaloa said.
The date of the festival and other related activities regarding holding the festival will be finalised at a conference scheduled to be held in Batticaloa district secretariat on August 24 with Mr.Sundaram Arumainayagam, Batticaloa Government Agent in the chair, provincial council sources said. Mr.R.Thiakalingam, Secretary to the East Education Ministry also to attend the conference. Meanwhile, the North Provincial Council has already decided to hold its first Tamil Literary Festival in Mannaar town during the first week of October. The Supreme Court ordered de-merger on petitions filed by the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) and Jathika Hela Urumaya (JHU) challenging the validity of the merger under the Indo-Sri Lanka Peace Accord.
