A soldier of the Razeek group and a person suspected to be a member of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) was killed in a fire-fight with the Liberation Tigers in Batticaloa this morning when an ambush party of the special Tamil paramilitary unit of the Sri Lankan Army surprised a minor supply camp of the LTTE.
The Razeek group's ambush party had set out last night from the SLA camp Kommathurai, 18 kilometers north of Batticaloa to the Santhanamadu Aaru area which is in the LTTE controlled hinterland, 5 kilometers to the west. The Razeek group ambush party had gone to the spot in the night upon the receipt of information that the LTTE was running a small supply base at Illukkuvettai in Santhanamadu Aaru. A leader of the group in Chenkalady claimed that the ambush party had brought back 2 motorcycles, 5 bicycles and a walkie talkie set from the spot. The body of the person alleged to be a member of the LTTE was also brought back and is yet to be identified. The Razeek group cadre killed in the fighting is Nallaratnam Kurukulasingham, 22 alias Pirapan of Periyathurai near Batticaloa town.
