Civilian shot, injured in Kokkaddichcholai

An unknown gunman shot and seriously injured a Tamil civilian riding a bicycle at Kokkaddichcholai in the Paduvaankarai region in Batticaloa district at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday. The gunmen escaped after shooting at the victim.

The victim, Nallathamby Sivanathan, 33, of Vavu'natheevu was admitted to the Batticaloa Teaching Hospital for treatment.

Paduvaankarai residents displaced due to the military offensive during early part of 2007 were resettled only recently.

Sri Lanka Police started to function in this region, previously administered by LTTE, after a lapse of many years, is facing difficulties in maintaining law and order, the Member of Parliament of this area P. Ariyaneththiran said.

Kokkaddichcholai is located 14 km southwest of Batticaloa.
