Unidentified armed men opened fire on three Muslim youths Friday around 4:25 p.m on Chavukkadi beach, injuring one of them, Ea'raavoor police said. The youths were on the beach spending time leisurely when the armed men shot at them and beat them with batons.

The injured youth admitted to Batticaloa hospital is identified as Mohamed Riyas, 26, from Thaikkaa Veethi in Ea'raavoor.

The other two injured are Riya's friends.

Residents of Chavukkadi alleged that members of Karuna group had attacked the Muslim youths.

The armed men also forced the youths to hold hand grenades and guns in their hands and had photographed them with the weapons, the Muslim youths said to the police.

Chavukkadi, a coastal village in Ea'raavoor police division, is located 4 km east of Ea'ravoor boundary and 15 km northeast of Batticaloa.
