Paduvaankarai IDPs' cattle to be appropriated – Batticaloa MP

[TamilNet, Wednesday, 12 September 2007, 09:27 GMT]
Sri Lanka Defence Ministry has ordered the transfer of nearly 20 thousand cattle belonging to the Internally Displaced People (IDP) of Paduvaagkarai in Batticaloa, to Polanaruwa National Cattle Development Centre, citing danger to the Sri Lanka Army (SLA) camps located on Chengkaladi-Badulla A5 road, Batticaloa Tamil National Alliance (TNA) parliamentarian Ariyanenthiran said.

The economy of the Tamils in Paduvaankarai will be severely affected by this move, the MP added.

Paduvaankarai IDPs, displaced due to SLA offensive in April, are staying in refugee camps in Vanthaarumoolai, Siththaandi and Kiraan.

Their cattle, left unattended, are roaming in areas near Ka'ruththappaalam, located 20 km from Paduvvankarai, on Chengkaladi- Badulla road.

A meeting to discuss the transfer of the cattle to Polanaruwa is scheduled to be held September 17 at Batticaloa District Secretariat (DS) in which a Secretary of the Cattle Development Ministry is expected to discuss the issue with the officials of the DS.
