SLA warns civilians of major assault
[TamilNet, Thursday, 19 November 1998, 20:05 GMT]
The Sri Lankan Army (SLA) warned today civilians living near LTTE camps and positions, to move away to protect themselves from the attacks by the security forces. The warning was sent over the Jaffna radio broadcast at 5.00 p.m. and 11.00 p.m. This special transmission can be listened only in the Jaffna peninsula.
The warning was also faxed to the Uthayan, a Tamil daily published in Jaffna, from the Headquarters of the Security Forces in Palaly. It was typed in Tamil signed by Major T.A.R.Lunuwila on behalf of the commander. The press note to Uthayan said that the security forces have planned a major assault against the LTTE positions, who are planning to celebrate the 'Maaveerar day' (Heroes day) from 21 to 27 instant. Security forces will launch aerial bombing and mortar attacks on the LTTE camps. The SLA warns therefore civilians to move away from areas near LTTE camps. It further said that the security forces could not be held responsible for the safety of those who ignore this warning.
