Former home guard shot dead in Welikanda

Unidentified armed men shot dead a former Sri Lanka Home guard Wednesday around 4:15 a.m, as he was going for prayers at the mosque near his home at Katuwanwila in Welikanda police division in Polonnaruwa district, Welikanda police said. The victim left his home guard service a year ago after serving for six years.
The victim was identified as Ibrahim Subahir, 28, a father of two children and a resident of Katuwanwila Navasena area. Subahir, who was observing fast, was shot dead at point blank range. His body was brought to Welikanda hospital for postmortem examinations, and later handed over to his relatives, the police said. Subahir had been trying to go abroad, and currently was engaged in cultivation, local residents said. Many home guards work in Welikanda area which is located at the border between Batticaloa and Polonnaruwa districts. Welikanda police are conducting further investigation into the killing.
