Muslim couple injured in Akkaraipattu grenade attack

Men alleged to be local Sinhala residents hurled a hand grenade at the house of an elderly Muslim couple Wednesday around 4:35 a.m, at Champunakar in Akkaraipattu police division in Ampaa'rai district, seriously injuring them. Local Sinhala residents of border area were also alleged to have set fire to houses of Muslim people in Campunakar area in September.
The injured were identified as M. A. Ummuna Umma, 58, and her husband Sinnalebbai Salithamby, 60. The elderly couple was asleep in their tin roofed house when they were attacked. The wife was admitted to Ampaa'rai hospital while her husband was admitted to Akkaraipattu hospital, Akkaraipattu police said. Security arrangements in the area have been strengthened searches being launched by relevant authorities. Sinhala residents have been threatening Muslims living in the border areas to vacate their villages, and the grenade attack is a continuation of the intimidation, local muslim sources said.
