Speculation over new Jaffna Mayor
[TamilNet, Monday, 23 November 1998, 20:31 GMT]
The Deputy Mayor of Jaffna, Mr. Raviraj, is expected to be nominated as the new mayor of the Jaffna Municipal Council, said TULF sources today. The sources said that the TULF officials are holding discussions with Mr. Raviraj urging him to accept the post.
K. Sinnathurai will be appointed to the post of Deputy Mayor if Mr. Raviraj becomes the new mayor, the sources further said. However, Mr. Raviraj said that he has not decided whether to accept the post. Commenting on a local radio station, Sooriyan F.M, in Colombo, Mr. Raviraj said that he was considering the request from the TULF leadership. Former Mayor Mr. Sivapalan was killed in a bomb explosion in September. Meanwhile the MP, Asweer asked in the Sri Lankan parliament today whether the Anti Aircraft guns have been deployed within the parliament complex amidst reports that LTTE could launch air attacks on the parliament. The Deputy Foreign Minister Lukshman Giriyelle accused the MP of giving sensitive information to the Liberation Tigers. The Opposition leader, Mr. Ranil Wikremesinghe, interrupted and said that if a parliamentarian fears that there is a danger of parliament being attacked he has the right to get clarify and no one can deny that.
