Stabbed MPCS President dies[TamilNet, Wednesday, 25 November 1998, 18:25 GMT]Suppiah Veerasingam, President of the Multi Purpose Co-operative Society, Vavuniya died at Anuradhapura hospital around 7.50 p.m. today Wednesday. He had been attacked by an unidentified group on Sunday 15 November at 8.30 p.m. at his house at Nelukulam, 4 miles west of Vavuniya town. Three youths who went to his house had asked him to come with them to identify two persons whom they had reportedly arrested on suspicion. When Veerasingam said that he was unable to leave his house and asked for the suspects to be brought to his house instead, he had been threatened with a pistol by one of the two men who had entered his house. The two gunmen had then locked up his wife, daughter and another young man who was staying with them, in one of the rooms and taken Veerasingam along with them to the road, locking the front door behind them. Veerasingam had been stabbed several times in his stomach and left on the road to bleed to death. Some of the other people of the house had screamed out and attracted the attention of the neighbours who had rushed Veerasingam to Vavuniya hospital. He had immediately transferred to Anuradhapura hospital's Intensive Care Unit where he had undergone treatment for the past 10 days. Hospital sources said that his stomach, kidney and the lungs had been damaged by the stab injuries and attempts to save his life had been unsuccessful.
