Mr. Balachandran, MP for Vanni, asked in the Sri Lankan Parliament yesterday why two Deputy Inspector Generals of Police (DIGs) have been nominated for the North-East Province, when it is considered as one province when funds are allocated during the budget.
He was speaking during the debate on the allocation of funds for the Ministry of Provincial Councils and Local Government. He also said that members of the local government bodies in the Northeast have not been given adequate security. He further said that the President, Chandrika Kumaratunge, promised the local councillors, prior to the elections that funds would be to allocated for development projects. However, the funds that have been allocated so far are very minimal.
