Police teams were rushed to the southern coastal town of Galle this evening following a fracas between some Sri Lankan navy personnel and local residents. The incident took place after a cricket match, said sources. Galle is a large port town, 116 kilometers south of Colombo.
Further clashes between angry residents and the sailors will be prevented said a Police source. However, residents said that the situation, in the suburb of the town where the fracas erupted this evening, is still tense. Elsewhere, an army camp in the hill town of Ulapana in Sri Lanka's central province caught fire this morning, said SLA sources. They said that the cause of the fire is yet to be clearly determined, although, reports indicated that the fuel tank of a vehicle might have burst. Unconfirmed reports said that a soldier was wounded in the fire. The situation was brought under control by afternoon said an army source.
