Jaffna detainees taken to Anuradhapura

Twenty three persons arrested recently in Jaffna, and detained at the KKS detention centre, were produced at the Anuradhapura Courts, said the Human Rights Commission in Jaffna.

Members of the commission's Jaffna branch, Mr. S. Sreetharan, and N.Forman, were informed by the authorities when they visited the detention centre yesterday.

Mr. S.Sreetharan said that S.Manoharan, 27, who was arrested on November 16, in Jaffna, is detained at the KKS detention centre. He said that he made inquiries about his arrest after detainee's wife contacted the commission.

Meanwhile he released the names of the following persons detained at the KKS detention centre:

1. A.Sabesan,19, Elalai north, arrested in Chunnakam on 14.11.98


2. Vicjneswaran, 20, Vilichitty, Elalai south, arrested in Chunnakam on 16.11.98
3. A.Arul Mich Jacson, 23, Park Road, Kurunagar, arrested in Kurunagar on 23.11.98
4. N.Subas, 23, Kodavil north, arrested in Kodavil on 23.11.98
5. K.Ratneswaran,21, Kondavil north, arrested in Kondavil on 21.11.98
6. C.Manoharan, 27, Kondavil east, arrested in Irupalai on 20.11.98
7. C.Ariyaratnam,33,Maiylankadu, Elalai, arrested in Chunnakam on 12.11.98
8. T.Sarmilaraj, 20, Soorawathai, Chunnakam, arrested in Chunnakam on 12.11.98


9. A.Vieyakumar,25, Kurumbasiddy, Thellipalai, arrested in Kolumbuthurai on 17.11.98

People in the Nallur and Thellipalai areas of Jaffna said that milk powder packets, distributed through relief schemes, were spoilt and that they had found worms in them. They were distributed through the Multi Purpose Co-operative societies.

Meanwhile the Postmaster of the Jaffna Head Post Office, Mr. S. Kodeeswaran, said that the civil Administration Centre in Jaffna has given permission to send video tapes, by post from Jaffna, to other parts of the island and to foreign countries. Only audio tapes were allowed earlier.

He said the permission had been given after he had held discussions with the Civil Administration Centre.
