[TamilNet, Thursday, 06 December 2007, 00:58 GMT]
Women and children seeking protection with Jaffna office of Human Rights Commission (JHRC) will be housed in the vacant Appeal Courts building in Kurugar effective Wednesday, civil society sources in Jaffna said. This centre will be looked after by the Child Protection Group operating in Jaffna peninsula.

The building remained vacant since the Appeal Courts was moved in late October to the World Bank funded newly built five story Judicial Complex located in the central part of Jaffna town

Jaffna magistrate with the approval from Government of Sri Lanka (GOSL) arranged for a group of 13 women and children, residing at Irupalai church, to be transported to the Kurunagar centre Wednesday.

Effective today, women and children in Jaffna peninsula seeking protection with JHRC will be accommodated in Kurunagar building.

Civil groups welcomed the new arrangements since it will ease the overcrowding of civilians seeking protection presently accomodated in Jaffna Prison buildings without adequate facilities and also will be able to provide more conducive environment for the children.
