University student mysteriously killed[TamilNet, Saturday, 28 November 1998, 19:45 GMT]University students of Moratuwa in Colombo district have appealed to the President of Sri Lanka, Chandrika Bandaranayake, to order a police investigation into the death of their colleague. The student, Saththiyanathan Thamilkumaran, was mysteriously killed in Vavuniya, on Thursday 26 November. Saththiyanathan Thamilkumaran, a first year student, was found dead at Koomankulam, 3 miles west of Vavuniya town on Friday morning. He was returning to the university of Moratuwa, after visiting his mother at Skandapuram in Kilinochchi district, when he was killed, police said. He went to a relative's house at Koomankulam on Thursday, after coming from Kilinochchi, and started off to Vavuniya to board the night mail train which leaves for Colombo at 9.15pm. The following day his body was found with head injuries. Police investigations revealed that he had been assaulted on the back of his head. A motive for the killing has not been found and nobody has been arrested by the police in connection with the murder. After the inquest, the body was sent to the Vanni through the Sri Lank Red Cross Society in Vavuniya. Moratuwa university students have said that Saththiyanathan Thamilkumaran was killed mysteriously and, have appealed to the President to order the police or concerned officials to conduct investigations to bring the culprits to book.
