Maheswaran's TV interview to drive Police investigations

[TamilNet, Thursday, 03 January 2008, 19:31 GMT]
The Colombo Additional Magistrate Ravindra Premaratne Thursday instructed the Police to conduct investigation into the killing of Mr. Thiagarajah Maheswaran, Colombo district parliamentarian of the main opposition United National Party (UNP), based on the latter's interview carried by Sakthi television in the "Minnal" programme prior to his death.

The court issued this directive to the police on submission made by lawyers who watched the interests of the deceased when the matter was taken up for inquiry.

Mr.Maheswaran in the interview had told that he would submit a report in the parliament when it resumes its sitting on January 8 about the involvement of persons taken to Jaffna from Colombo regarding the abduction and killing of Tamils in Jaffna district.

Nine suspects excluding the suspect now warded in the national hospital with the gunshot injuries were produced in court.

The court also allowed the application by the police to detain all the suspects in police custody and to conduct inquiry into the murder.

The court was told that the police had already recorded the statement of the suspect now warded in the hospital.
