Bomb blast kills 2 youths, injures 2 SLA troops in Jaffna

Sri Lanka Army (SLA) sources in Jaffna claimed that two youths caught in a cordon and search in Navaanththu’rai area Sunday around 12.30 p,m activated bombs killing themselves while seriously injuring two of their troops. Eyewitnesses from the area said that the two youths were seen going towards the beach when the blast occurred. Jaffna magistrate R. T. Vignarajah visited the scene of the blast Sunday evening and conducted inquiries.

The two injured SLA troops were rushed to Palaali Military Hospital.

SLA claimed that the two youths had lain in ambush and had triggered the bombs on being discovered in the search operation launched on a tip off.

The remains of the two youths were handed over to Jaffna Teaching Hospital mortuary Sunday evening.

The bomb blast took place 300 meters from Jaffna town near the old Leyden garment factory in Naavaanththu’rai area in SLA High Security Zone.

SLA conducted a search operation following the blast deploying large number of troops in the area.
