Unidentified gunmen shot to death Thursday night 10:00 p.m. an elderly civilian, a resident of Uma mill road, Kommaathu’rai within Ea’raavoor Police division in Batticaloa district, police sources said.

The victim was identified as Marimuthu Arumugam, 58, father of seven children and a retired science laboratory assistant of Vincent Girls School, Batticaloa.

The gunmen arriving at his residence just after the victim had finished his dinner together with his family called him out by name. Since the victim failed to come out the armed men shot through a hole in the house and fled from the scene.

The victim’s body was recovered by Ea’raavoor Police and transferred to the Ea’raavoor hospital for postmortem examinations.

Police have commenced investigation into the killing.

Kommaathu’rai is located 15 k.m north of Batticaloa.
