Court fixes inquiry into Mano Ganeshan's petition

[TamilNet, Saturday, 19 January 2008, 12:41 GMT]
A Writ Application filed on Thursday by Colombo district parliamentarian Mr.Mano Ganeshan, leader of the Western Peoples Front, in the Court of Appeals against the reduction of his security personnel and withdrawal of the back-up vehicle allocated to him, is listed to be taken up for inquiry on January 24, legal sources in Colombo said.

Mr.Mano Ganeshan, the convener of the Civil Monitoring Commission and human rights activist, has cited four respondents including the Secretary of the Ministry of Defense Gothabaya Rajapakse, and Inspector General of Police (IGP) Victor Perera in his writ application.

Mr.Mano Ganeshan has begged the court to issue a mandate in the nature of a Writ of Mandamus directing the respondents to restore the security to him as was prevailing on 18 December 2007, by the provision of 10 armed police personnel, back-up vehicle and a motor cycle rider.

Mr.Mano Ganeshan has brought to the notice of the court through his petition that due to the demands of his work in the protection of human rights, he was exposed to great personal danger at the hands of violent elements, and in particular, the risk to his involvement in the Civil Monitoring Campaign against abductions and killings.
