EROS nominations rejected

Sri Lanka's Elections Commissioner rejected the nominations filed by the Eelavar Democratic Front (EDF) for the Northwestern Provincial Council today on the ground that a person identified as K.G.R Pathmasena, a Sinhalese from Malwana, had fraudulently signed the papers instead of Velupillai Balakumar, who still remains the general secretary of the party. Mr.Balakumar joined the Liberation Tigers eight years ago.
The EDF is the political party that the EROS registered with the Commissioner of Elections in 1988 to contest parliament polls at the time. Sources said that the majority of the persons in the nomination lists, filed yesterday at the Puttalam and Kurunagala Kachcheries, were Sinhala. Election Commission sources said that neither the motive of K.G.R Pathmasena nor his political antecedents were not very clear. The remnant of the EROS in Colombo was not available for comment today as well. Mr.Pathmasena could not be contacted at the number he had given in the nomination papers to confirm whether he was actually representing the interests of the EDF.
