Court recommends additional security to Mano Ganeshan

[TamilNet, Friday, 01 February 2008, 10:54 GMT]
The Colombo High Court Wednesday recommended to the Attorney General to provide at least eight police personnel and a back-up vehicle to Mr.Mano Ganeshan, Colombo district parliamentarian. The two-member bench of the court, K.Sripavan and Ms Shiranee Kulathunge, gave time till February 7 to the Attorney General to consider its recommendation, legal sources said.

The recommendation was made when the writ application filed by Mr.Mano Ganeshan against the reduction of the security to him from 12 security personnel to two came up for further hearing on Wednesday.

The Court of Appeal earlier gave time till January 30 for the Attorney General to submit a report providing more security to Mr.Mano Ganeshan.

When the case was taken up on January 30 the State Counsel who appeared on behalf of the Attorney General told court that the police department was able to provide at least five police personnel as security to Mr.Mano Ganeshan. This was due to shortage of police personnel as the police department needs about 700 police personnel to provide security to candidates contesting local elections in Batticaloa district.

AG's Counsel further claimed that according to intelligence reports that there was no death threat to Mr.Mano Ganeshan, legal sources said.

However, the court said considering the security to Mr.Mano Ganeshan that the court is of opinion that he should be provided with at least eight police personnel, legal sources said.
