20 civilians killed, bomb attack on bus in Dambulla

A bomb exploded in Dambulla in Matale district, targeting a bus bound to Anuradhapura from Kandy Saturday at 7:05 a.m., initial reports said. 20 civilians were killed and 72 wounded. Most of the victims were pilgrims to Ruwanwelisaya, a Buddhist stupa in Anuradhapura, Police said. 16 females and four males were killed. 46 wounded have been admitted at Dambulla hospital and 26 at Matale hospital.
Thirteen civilians died on the spot, two while being taken to hospital and five succumbed to their wounds at hospitals. Dambulla district borders with six districts, Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa, Ampaa'rai, Badulla, Kandy and Kurnegala, and is located in Central Province. The attack comes amid thousands of Sri Lanka Army, Special Task Force and Civil Defence Force home guards were searching for armed men in the jungles located in these districts.
