Monsoon rains continue to mercilessly lash the Vanni region. Sources there said that the rainfall average since last week has been 40mm low and 102 mm high. In Mullaithivu, three tanks including the Udayarkattukkulam have breached their bunds.
The water level in the spills of several other tanks are going up to dangerous levels said officials in the area. According to reports last evening the spill of Peyraankandal Kulam has risen by 5 inches, that of Kottaikattiya Kulam 7 inches and the Maruthankulam spill by one foot. The resulting floods have inundated the Puththuvettuvan - Thunukkai road. (this route turns off west from the Kokkavil junction on the A9.) Floods from the Udayarkattukkulam and other tanks have submerged the Paranthan Mullaithivu road in three places. More than six thousand people who were originally displaced from Jaffna in late 1995, and had settled in these parts ,have been rendered homeless again by the floods.
