Ministry reshuffle impacts relief supplies for Jaffna IDPs

[TamilNet, Sunday, 17 February 2008, 16:46 GMT]
The distribution of relief supplies for Internally Displaced People (IDPs) within Jaffna peninsula has been seriously affected due to shifting of the responsibility from the Ministry of Nation Building to the Ministry of Resettlement and Disaster Relief services, Jaffna Government Agent (GA) K.Ganesh said, Sunday.

Since the Government of Sri Lanka( GOSL) has not yet sent any relief supplies for the IDPs from January, the distribution of supplies has been hampered severely affecting the lives the civilians who are dependent on the government assistance, officials of Jaffna secretariat said.

Thousands of families from the islets and Thenmaraadchi internally displaced due to the prevailing war situation are in desperate need of relief supplies, sources said.

Once the supplies are received from Colombo, they will be distributed to the IDPs taking into consideration the period of non distribution of supplies, Jaffna GA added.
