University Staff demand payment
[TamilNet, Thursday, 17 December 1998, 12:55 GMT]
Academic and non academic staff of the Vavuniya Campus of the University of Jaffna staged a strike this morning demanding payment of the incentive allowance. The strikers said that their repeated requests for the payment of the allowance had been ignored by the authorities and so they had been forced to take this action.
They said that although other government employees had received their incentive allowance, employees of the Universities and Vavuniya Campus had not been given their due payment. As a result of this strike the final examinations for English, Accountancy and Finance courses will not be held. Students said that today was the final day of the English examinations. The final examination for Accountancy and Finance was to commence tomorrow. Sources said that the university staff of Jaffna, Batticaloa and Southeast are on a one week strike for the same reasons.
