Gun men rob grocery stores in Vanthaarumoolai

Unidentified armed men robbed two business establishments one at Chiththaandi and another at Vanthaarumoolai in Batticaloa district Sunday night sources said.

The store located on Chiththaandi main road was broken into between 7:00p.m and 9:00p.m and valuables including and cash and jewellery were robbed, the store owner Krishnapillai Maheswaran said.

Mu'rakkoddaagncheanai Army Camp is located 300 metres north of this shop while Maavediveambu army camp is located 300 metres south of the store. In addition, Sri Lanka Army (SLA) troopers regularly patrol the roads in the night. However, store was robbed by armed men while the soldiers were on security patrol, sources said.

Meanwhile, on the same night another grocery store located on Vanthaarumoolai Main Road was broken into and many goods stolen, the proprietor of the store Gobi said.

Such robberies are being conducted by armed groups operating in the area, area residents said.

Ea’raavoor police have commenced investigations into the robberies.
