Water cutting festival of the historic Valveddiththu'rai Muththumaariyamman temple was held Sunday with the participation of thousands of devotees who took the holy deity Muththumaariyamman, Pi’l’laiyaar, and Murukan in procession to the shores where the deities were ceremoniously bathed with the devotees joining them, sources in Vadamaraadchi said.
Sri Lanka Army (SLA) had refused permission to observe this festival last year and the festival was held with limited participation of the devotees. The procession carrying the holy deities went along the Point Pedro- Valveddiththu’rai- Tho’ndaimaanaa’ru coastal road to the selected holy site in the beach. SLA uses this road daily to transport troops and weapons to the Northern Front Defence Line areas.
