Court releases Trincomalee JVP parliamentarian on bail

Jayantha Wijesekara, Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) Trincomalee district parliamentarian was released on cash and surety bail by the Colombo Chief Magistrate Monday. He surrendered to the Welikada police on April 11 following a complaint that he had been involved in the hijacking of official vehicles belonged to dissident JVP parliamentarians Piyasiri Wijenaike and Achchala Jagoda from parliamentary complex. He was produced in court and remanded, legal sources said.
His bail application was refused last week when he was produced in court despite his lawyers' plea that he was urgently needed to conduct JVP electioneering for the east provincial council election in his district. He was ordered further remand till April 21. Jayantha Wijesekara was enlarged on a cash bail in a sum of Rs: 5,000 and a surety bail in a sum of one hundred thousand rupees with two sureties. Two other suspects also were enlarged on cash and surety bail, legal sources said. Meanwhile the first JVP election rally for the east election in Trincomalee district is to be held Tuesday 22nd April at Kanthalaai town with the participation of Jayantha Wijesekara whose native place is also Kanthalaai. JVP leader Somawanse Amerasinghe, general secretary Tilvin Silva and parliamentarian Anura Dissanayake are also billed to address the JVP election rally, JVP sources said.
