Internal strife forces JVP to abandon May Day procession

The Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) has decided not to hold May Day procession this year due to prevailing volatile security situation and internal party squabble. JVP high command however decided to hold a public meeting at Colombo municipal grounds, party sources said.
Somawanse Amerasinghe is to preside over the May Day rally. Its general secretary Tilvin Silva and parliamentarians Anura Kumara Dissanayake, Vijitha Heart and K.D.Lalkantha are billed to address the rally, party sources said. Meanwhile the fifth annual national convention of the JVP will be held on April 27.The JVP leadership is likely to announce its new thinking following the split in the party on that day. Furthermore that JVP central committee is likely to take decision to fill the posts of parliamentary group leader and the propaganda secretary which fell vacant. Parliamentarian Wimal Weerawanse held both posts till he was suspended.
