New Year Grand Fair to be held in Durraiappah Stadium, Jaffna

Jaffna Government Agent (GA) and Sri Lanka Army (SLA) have jointly invited Jaffna peninsula residents to take part in the one day Grand Fair that is to be held in Jaffna Durraiappah Stadium Saturday as a New Year event, the report issued to the media in Jaffna by GA and SLA Thursday night said.

Durraiappah Stadium that had been appropriated by the SLA since 11 August 2006 is to be handed back to Jaffna Municipal Council (JMC) and the Saturday Grand Fair is said to be held to mark this occasion as well as a continuation of the Tamil, Sinhala New Year celebration this year, sources close to Jaffna Secretariat said.

Free books for the students of Jaffna peninsula will also be issued at the Grand Fair.

The report to the media said that the public will be able to buy all their essential provisions at the Grand Fair as well as other consumer goods.

Free medical services will also be available at the Grand Fair, the report further said.

The Grand Fair, that is being held with the participation of Jaffna Secretariat, SLA and the Jaffna peninsula traders’ organization, will be open from Saturday 8:00 a.m till evening.

SLA troops and JMC employees are engaged in clearing the shrubs near Jaffna Fort and Durraiappah Stadium.
