Vehicles sans number plates used for east electioneering

Campaign for Free and Fair Election (CAFFE), an election monitoring group, has lodged a complaint with the Sri Lankan Commissioner of Elections that vehicles without number plates are being used for electioneering in the eastern province. CAFFE said in a statement Saturday its monitors also have personally noted such vehicles being used for canvassing apart from complaints from the public.

Using vehicles without number plates during the election campaign would certainly make the people to lose confidence on the free and fair election, said Keerthi Tennekoon, CAFFE spokesman.

He added apart from incidents of election related violence, his organization has received complaints of partiality by some police officials and misuse of state properties.
