Tamil fisherman shot, killed in Kalkudaa

Unidentified armed men following a fisherman in Paddiyadichcheanai area in GTZ village of Kalkudaa within Kalkudaa police division in Batticaloa district, shot him at close range Wednesday night 9:15 p.m.and fled the scene, sources said.

The seriously injured victim was transported to Vaazhaichchenai district hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.

The victim identified as Ponniah Suntheralingam, 38, a resident of Paddiyadicheanai, had traveled to Vaazhaichchenai to attend a personal matter, and was returning home when the shooting incident took place along Kalkudaa road, relatives said.

Kalkudaa police have commenced investigation into the killing.

Mr.Manickavasagar, the Vaazhaichchenai district Magistrate, visited the mortuary of Vaalaichchenai district hospital and after conducting prelimilinary investigations, ordered a post mortem examination to be held, and instructed the police to submit the report.

Magistrate also directed the police to produce the witnesses in the courts on 22 May.

After granting permission to hand over the body of the victim to his wife Manickam Kavitha, the magistrate questioned the victim’s wife and another relative, Manickam Jeevaratnam, regarding the shooting incident.
