Youth shot dead, SLA imposes curfew in Jaffna

Sri Lanka Army (SLA) implemented a sudden curfew Monday afternoon in three coastal towns in the vicinity of Kudaakadal , within the Jaffna municipality area. The announcement of the curfew to be implemented from 5:00 p.m. Monday until 5:00 a.m. Tuesday in Kozhumpuththu’rai, Paasaiyoor and Kurunakar was made Monday noon through loud speakers fixed to three wheelers with the assistance of Fishermen’s Federation, sources said.
Consequence to the announcement the schools and offices in the area were hurriedly closed and the students, and general public rushed home. The normal activities in these areas have been seriously affected and the people are compelled to be confined within their homes. Until now there were only six hours of curfew in place from 10:30p.m. until 4:30a.m. Meanwhile, a Tamil youth was shot and killed along St.Patrick’s road Monday noon and the victim has been identified as Patrick Divingston, 30. The incident happened in front of a restaurant named Loyola Hotel, in the vicinity of cemetery belonging to St.Mary’s cathedral. The victim’s body recovered immediately by Jaffna police has been kept at the mortuary of Jaffna teaching hospital. The curfew was imposed due to this killing, and search operations might commence soon, the area residents said. The main base of 512 Division of SLA is located in this area.
