Norwegian Politician regrets irrationality of International Community

[TamilNet, Saturday, 14 June 2008, 23:56 GMT]
The International Community, stamped out all important Tamil organisations by branding them as terrorists, while remaining passive to the misdeeds of the Sinhala government. By doing so, the IC has acted irrationally, said Trond Jensrud, a ruling Labour Party (AP) politician of the Oslo Municipal Council while addressing the Pongku Thamizh rally held at Valle Hovin stadium in Oslo, the capital of Norway, on Saturday. The Norwegian government should seriously consider the Tamil stance stated clearly in this rally and take it up with the International forum, he further said.

"The Norwegian government representatives made an attempt to visit the Tamil areas for a dialogue, which I am glad about. But, the Sri Lankan government has turned down their request. The IC was too mild in its responses to such rebukes from the Sri Lankan government," Mr. Jensrud said.

"Your declaration is crystal clear that the Tamil struggle is not against the Sinhala people, but against an oppressive government that has killed and displaced Tamil people. The whole world should get this message."

"Even though you are happy hear in Oslo, you dream about getting back to your home. What is happening there to your kith and kin pre-occupy your minds. Very few in Norway understand this."

"Only a few Norwegian politicians come forward to say what they mean on the situation in Sri Lanka. I have no hesitation in categorically stating that the Tamil people deserve a free and independent country, a free Thamizh Eezham," he concluded with a thundering applause of the audience.

Mr. Sam Jared, representing an Eritrean organisation in Oslo, in his speech compared the similarities between the cause of the Eritreans and Tamils, and stated that the victory of Tamils is a logical conclusion as their struggle is based on the principle of the right of self-determination.

The special guests on the occasion were Pulamaippiththan and Arivumathy, well known poets and cini lyrists from Tamil Nadu, India.

Poet Arivumathy, while speaking said that he was clearly aware of what the Eezham Tamils want. But, he wanted the audience to demonstrate it to the media and to the world. When he asked who among the audience wanted to resolve the Sri Lankan crisis under a unitary state, no one stood up. But, when he called for the response for a separate Thamizh Eezham, all the audience stood up.

Around 3,000 Tamils attended the Pongku Thamizh event that lasted for more than 4 hours Saturday evening.
