Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) parliamentarian Ms Anjana Umma representing Gampaha district has decided to function as an independent, parliamentary sources said. She made this known to parliamentary circles Tuesday when she made a complaint to the police unit in the parliament seeking their assistance to get her two vehicles assigned to her from the party.
She further said in her complaint that two JVP parliamentarians obstructed her from going to the police, according Welikada police sources. Ten parliamentarians led by Wimal Weerawanse quit the JVP and have been functioning as a separate group in the parliament. They have formed a new party Janatha Nidahas Peramuna (JNP) but it is yet to be approved by the Commissioner of Elections as a registered political party, sources said.
