More than 300 unemployed graduates launched a token protest Monday around 7:00 a.m in front of Jaffna Main Educational complex in Nalloor preventing the officials entering the Education Offices, in a demand for immediate employment, sources in Jaffna said. The graduates said that they were prepared to launch a continuous fast protest from Tuesday if the authorities were not ready to meet their demands.
The protesting graduates said that they had already appealed to the relevant Educational Authorities seeking employment besides informing the Government Agent (GA) Jaffna and the police. So far, there has been no response to the appeal and the token protest is being staged Monday to express the disappointment and the decision to continue the demonstration as a fast protest from Tuesday if the authorities do give us a positive assurance of employment immediately, the protestors said. The protestors held placards which demanded immediate employment. Meanwhile, the interview that was to be held from Monday to select a certain number of unemployed graduates for teaching posts was postponed indefinitely due to the protest demonstration. The interview was to be held for five days. Officials of Northern Province Education Ministry had come from Trincomalee to conduct the interview. The Main Educational Complex in Jaffna consists of Jaffna Zonal Director’s Office and the Additional Provincial Director for Northern Province Office and is located at Muththirai Chanththi, Nalloor in Jaffna.
